           Theacquaintanceshipmight,however,haveendedinaslowforgetting,butforanincidentwhichoccurredattheendofthesameweek.Oneafternoonitbegantofreeze,andthefrostincreasedwithevening,whichdrewonlikeastealthytighteningofbonds.Itwasatimewhenincottagesthebreathofthesleepersfreezestothesheets;whenroundthedrawing-roomfireofathick-walledmansionthesitters’backsarecold,evenwhilsttheirfacesareallaglow.Manyasmallbirdwenttobedsupperlessthatnightamongthebareboughs.

           Asthemilking-hourdrewnear,Oakkepthisusualwatchuponthecowshed.Atlasthefeltcold,andshakinganextraquantityofbeddingroundtheyearlingewesheenteredthehutandheapedmorefueluponthestove.
