ThefirsttodosowasthenowdefunctExaminer,which,intheimpressionbearingdateJuly15,1876,entitledoneofitsarticles"TheWessexLabourer,"thearticleturningouttobenodissertationonfarmingduringtheHeptarchy,butonthemodernpeasantofthesouth-westcounties,andhispresentationinthesestories.
SincethentheappellationwhichIhadthoughttoreservetothehorizonsandlandscapesofamerelyrealisticdream-country,hasbecomemoreandmorepopularasapracticaldefinition;andthedream-countryhas,bydegrees,solidifiedintoautilitarianregionwhichpeoplecangoto,takeahousein,andwritetothepapersfrom.ButIaskallgoodandgentlereaderstobesokindastoforgetthis,andtorefusesteadfastlytobelievethatthereareanyinhabitantsofaVictorianWessexoutsidethepagesofthisandthecompanionvolumesinwhichtheywerefirstdiscovered.
Moreover,thevillagecalledWeatherbury,whereinthescenesofthepresentstoryoftheseriesareforthemostpartlaid,wouldperhapsbehardlydiscerniblebytheexplorer,withouthelp,inanyexistingplacenowadays;thoughatthetime,comparativelyrecent,atwhichthetalewaswritten,asufficientrealitytomeetthedescriptions,bothofbackgroundsandpersonages,mighthavebeentracedeasilyenough.Thechurchremains,bygreatgoodfortune,unrestoredandintact,andafewoftheoldhouses;buttheancientmalt-house,whichwasformerlysocharacteristicoftheparish,hasbeenpulleddownthesetwentyyears;alsomostofthethatchedanddormeredcottagesthatwereoncelifeholds
