           ButheartlesscircumstancecouldnotleaveentireGabriel’shappinessofthismorning.Therams,oldewes,andtwo-sheareweshaddulyundergonetheirstripping,andthemenwereproceedingwiththeshear-lingsandhogs,whenOak’sbeliefthatshewasgoingtostandpleasantlybyandtimehimthroughanotherperformancewaspainfullyinterruptedbyFarmerBoldwood’sappearanceintheextremestcornerofthebarn.Nobodyseemedtohaveperceivedhisentry,buttherehecertainlywas.Boldwoodalwayscarriedwithhimasocialatmosphereofhisown,whicheverybodyfeltwhocamenearhim;andthetalk,whichBathsheba’spresencehadsomewhatsuppressed,wasnowtotallysuspended.

           HecrossedovertowardsBathsheba,whoturnedtogreethimwithacarriageofperfectease.Hespoketoherinlowtones,andsheinstinctivelymodulatedherowntothesamepitch,andhervoiceultimatelyevencaughttheinflectionofhis.
