           Bathsheba,afterthrowingaglancehere,acautionthere,andlecturingoneoftheyoungeroperatorswhohadallowedhislastfinishedsheeptogooffamongtheflockwithoutre-stampingitwithherinitials,cameagaintoGabriel,asheputdowntheluncheontodragafrightenedewetohisshear-station,flingingitoveruponitsbackwithadexteroustwistofthearm.Heloppedoffthetressesaboutitshead,andopeneduptheneckandcollar,hismistressquietlylookingon.

           "Sheblushesattheinsult,"murmuredBathsheba,watchingthepinkflushwhicharoseandoverspreadtheneckandshouldersoftheewewheretheywereleftbarebytheclickingshearsaflushwhichwasenviable,foritsdelicacy,bymanyqueensofcoteries,andwouldhavebeencreditable,foritspromptness,toanywomanintheworld.

           PoorGabriel’ssoulwasfedwithaluxuryofcontentbyhavingheroverhim,hereyescriticallyregardinghisskilfulshears,whichapparentlyweregoingtogatherupapieceofthefleshateveryclose,andyetneverdidso.LikeGuildenstern,Oakwashappyinthathewasnotoverhappy.Hehadnowishtoconversewithher:thathisbrightladyandhimselfformedonegroup,exclusivelytheirown,andcontainingnoothersintheworld,wasenough.

           Sothechatterwasallonherside.Thereisaloquacitythattellsnothing,whichwasBathsheba’s;andthereisasilencewhichsaysmuch:thatwasGabriel’s.
