           Arectangularspaceoflightappearedinthesideofthehut,andintheopeningtheoutlineofFarmerOak’sfigure.Hecarriedalanterninhishand,andclosingthedoorbehindhim,cameforwardandbusiedhimselfaboutthisnookofthefieldfornearlytwentyminutes,thelanternlightappearinganddisappearinghereandthere,andbrighteninghimordarkeninghimashestoodbeforeorbehindit.

           Oak’smotions,thoughtheyhadaquiet-energy,wereslow,andtheirdeliberatenessaccordedwellwithhisoccupation.Fitnessbeingthebasisofbeauty,nobodycouldhavedeniedthathissteadyswingsandturnsinandabouttheflockhadelementsofgrace.Yet,althoughifoccasiondemandedhecoulddoorthinkathingwithasmercurialadashascanthemenoftownswhoaremoretothemannerborn,hisspecialpower,morally,physically,andmentally,wasstatic,owinglittleornothingtomomentumasarule.

           Acloseexaminationofthegroundhereabout,evenbythewanstarlightonly,revealedhowaportionofwhatwouldhavebeencasuallycalledawildslopehadbeenappropriatedbyFarmerOakforhisgreatpurposethiswinter.Detachedhurdlesthatchedwithstrawwerestuckintothegroundatvariousscatteredpoints,amidandunderwhichthewhitishformsofhismeekewesmovedandrustled.Theringofthesheep-bell,whichhadbeensilentduringhisabsence,recommenced,intonesthathadmoremellownessthanclearness,owingtoanincreasinggrowthofsurroundingwool.ThiscontinuedtillOakwithdrewagainfromtheflock.
