           Afirmloudtreadwasnowheardstampingoutside;thedoorwasopenedaboutsixinches,andsomebodyontheothersideexclaimed

           Thedoorwasflungbacktillitkickedthewallandtrembledfromtoptobottomwiththeblow.Mr.Oakappearedintheentrywithasteamingface,hay-bandswoundabouthisanklestokeepoutthesnow,aleatherstraproundhiswaistoutsidethesmock-frock,andlookingaltogetheranepitomeoftheworld’shealthandvigour.Fourlambshunginvariousembarrassingattitudesoverhisshoulders,andthedogGeorge,whomGabrielhadcontrivedtofetchfromNorcombe,stalkedsolemnlybehind.
