Heravocationsabovehavingshutoutallnoisebutwhatshecreatedherself,sheknewnotthatavisitorhadarrivedwithinthelastfewminutes,till,onenteringtheroom,thefirstobjectshebeheldwasayoungmanwhomshehadneverseenbefore.Withalookofmuchrespect,heimmediatelyrose,andbeingintroducedtoherbyherconsciousdaughteras“Mr.HenryTilney,”withtheembarrassmentofrealsensibilitybegantoapologizeforhisappearancethere,acknowledgingthatafterwhathadpassedhehadlittlerighttoexpectawelcomeatFullerton,andstatinghisimpatiencetobeassuredofMissMorland’shavingreachedherhomeinsafety,asthecauseofhisintrusion.Hedidnotaddresshimselftoanuncandidjudgeoraresentfulheart.Farfromcomprehendinghimorhissisterintheirfather’smisconduct,Mrs.Morlandhadbeenalwayskindlydisposedtowardseach,andinstantly,pleasedbyhisappearance,receivedhimwiththesimpleprofessionsofunaffectedbenevolence;thankinghimforsuchanattentiontoherdaughter,assuringhimthatthefriendsofherchildrenwerealwayswelcomethere,andentreatinghimtosaynotanotherwordofthepast.
Hewasnotill-inclinedtoobeythisrequest,for,thoughhisheartwasgreatlyrelievedbysuchunlooked-formildness,itwasnotjustatthatmomentinhispowertosayanythingtothepurpose.Returninginsilencetohisseat,therefore,heremainedforsomeminutesmostcivillyansweringallMrs.Morland’scommonremarksabouttheweatherandroads.
