Themiddleseatofthechaisewasnotdrawnout,thoughtherewerethreepeopletogoinit,andhisdaughter’smaidhadsocrowdeditwithparcelsthatMissMorlandwouldnothaveroomtosit;and,somuchwasheinfluencedbythisapprehensionwhenhehandedherin,thatshehadsomedifficultyinsavingherownnewwriting-deskfrombeingthrownoutintothestreet.Atlast,however,thedoorwascloseduponthethreefemales,andtheysetoffatthesoberpaceinwhichthehandsome,highlyfedfourhorsesofagentlemanusuallyperformajourneyofthirtymiles:suchwasthedistanceofNorthangerfromBath,tobenowdividedintotwoequalstages.Catherine’sspiritsrevivedastheydrovefromthedoor;forwithMissTilneyshefeltnorestraint;and,withtheinterestofaroadentirelynewtoher,ofanabbeybefore,andacurriclebehind,shecaughtthelastviewofBathwithoutanyregret,andmetwitheverymilestonebeforesheexpectedit.Thetediousnessofatwohours’waitatPettyFrance,inwhichtherewasnothingtobedonebuttoeatwithoutbeinghungry,andloiteraboutwithoutanythingtosee,nextfollowed—andheradmirationofthestyleinwhichtheytravelled,ofthefashionablechaiseandfour—postilionshandsomelyliveried,risingsoregularlyintheirstirrups,andnumerousoutridersproperlymounted,sunkalittleunderthisconsequentinconvenience.
