           Catherineblushedanddisclaimed,andthegentleman’spredictionswereverified.Therewasasomething,however,inhiswordswhichrepaidherforthepainofconfusion;andthatsomethingoccupiedhermindsomuchthatshedrewbackforsometime,forgettingtospeakortolisten,andalmostforgettingwhereshewas;till,rousedbythevoiceofIsabella,shelookedupandsawherwithCaptainTilneypreparingtogivethemhandsacross.

           Isabellashruggedhershouldersandsmiled,theonlyexplanationofthisextraordinarychangewhichcouldatthattimebegiven;butasitwasnotquiteenoughforCatherine’scomprehension,shespokeherastonishmentinveryplaintermstoherpartner.
