           Itwouldhavebeenanactoffollytohaveproclaimedmyrighttofreedom;itwouldonlyhavesubjectedmetosevererscrutinyprobablyhaveconsignedmetosomemoredistantandinaccessibleregionthanevenBayouBœuf. EdwinEppswasapersonutterlyregardlessofablackman’srightsorwrongsutterlydestituteofanynaturalsenseofjustice,asIwellknew. Itwasimportant,therefore,notonlyasregardedmyhopeofdeliverance,butalsoasregardedthefewpersonalprivilegesIwaspermittedtoenjoy,tokeepfromhimthehistoryofmylife.
