           Maryfeltlonelierthaneverwhensheknewshewasnolongerinthehouse.Shewentoutintothegardenasquicklyaspossible,andthefirstthingshedidwastorunroundandroundthefountainflowergardententimes.Shecountedthetimescarefullyandwhenshehadfinishedshefeltinbetterspirits.Thesunshinemadethewholeplacelookdifferent.Thehigh,deep,blueskyarchedoverMisselthwaiteaswellasoverthemoor,andshekeptliftingherfaceandlookingupintoit,tryingtoimaginewhatitwouldbeliketoliedownononeofthelittlesnow-whitecloudsandfloatabout.Shewentintothefirstkitchen-gardenandfoundBenWeatherstaffworkingtherewithtwoothergardeners.Thechangeintheweatherseemedtohavedonehimgood.Hespoketoherofhisownaccord.

           “Springtime’scomin,’”hesaid.“Cannottha’smellit?”

           Marysniffedandthoughtshecould.
