VI. “There Was Someone Crying—there Was!”

           

           Inoneroom,whichlookedlikealady’ssitting-room,thehangingswereallembroideredvelvet,andinacabinetwereaboutahundredlittleelephantsmadeofivory.Theywereofdifferentsizes,andsomehadtheirmahoutsorpalanquinsontheirbacks.Someweremuchbiggerthantheothersandsomeweresotinythattheyseemedonlybabies.MaryhadseencarvedivoryinIndiaandsheknewallaboutelephants.Sheopenedthedoorofthecabinetandstoodonafootstoolandplayedwiththeseforquitealongtime.Whenshegottiredshesettheelephantsinorderandshutthedoorofthecabinet.

           Inallherwanderingsthroughthelongcorridorsandtheemptyrooms,shehadseennothingalive;butinthisroomshesawsomething.Justaftershehadclosedthecabinetdoorsheheardatinyrustlingsound.Itmadeherjumpandlookaroundatthesofabythefireplace,fromwhichitseemedtocome.Inthecornerofthesofatherewasacushion,andinthevelvetwhichcoveredittherewasahole,andoutoftheholepeepedatinyheadwithapairoffrightenedeyesinit.

           Marycreptsoftlyacrosstheroomtolook.Thebrighteyesbelongedtoalittlegraymouse,andthemousehadeatenaholeintothecushionandmadeacomfortablenestthere.Sixbabymicewerecuddledupasleepnearher.Iftherewasnooneelsealiveinthehundredroomsthereweresevenmicewhodidnotlooklonelyatall.

           “Iftheywouldn’tbesofrightenedIwouldtakethembackwithme,”saidMary.

           Shehadwanderedaboutlongenoughtofeeltootiredtowanderanyfarther,andsheturnedback.
