           Thestillnessoflakeandshoreandwoodwassowonderfulthathedidnotgointothevillahelivedin.Hewalkeddowntoalittleboweredterraceatthewater’sedgeandsatuponaseatandbreathedinalltheheavenlyscentsofthenight.Hefeltthestrangecalmnessstealingoverhimanditgrewdeeperanddeeperuntilhefellasleep.

           Hedidnotknowwhenhefellasleepandwhenhebegantodream;hisdreamwassorealthathedidnotfeelasifheweredreaming.Herememberedafterwardhowintenselywideawakeandalerthehadthoughthewas.Hethoughtthatashesatandbreathedinthescentofthelaterosesandlistenedtothelappingofthewaterathisfeetheheardavoicecalling.Itwassweetandclearandhappyandfaraway.Itseemedveryfar,buthehearditasdistinctlyasifithadbeenathisveryside.

           “Archie!Archie!Archie!”itsaid,andthenagain,sweeterandclearerthanbefore,“Archie!Archie!”

           Hethoughthesprangtohisfeetnotevenstartled.Itwassucharealvoiceanditseemedsonaturalthatheshouldhearit.

           “Lilias!Lilias!”heanswered.“Lilias!whereareyou?”

           “Inthegarden,”itcamebacklikeasoundfromagoldenflute.“Inthegarden!”

           Andthenthedreamended.Buthedidnotawaken.Hesleptsoundlyandsweetlyallthroughthelovelynight.Whenhedidawakeatlastitwasbrilliantmorningandaservantwasstandingstaringathim.HewasanItalianservantandwasaccustomed,asalltheservantsofthevillawere,toacceptingwithoutquestionanystrangethinghisforeignmastermightdo.
