XXVII. In The Garden

           Hewasactuallythinkingtenderlyhowlovelyitwasandwhatwondersofblueitshundredsoflittleblossomswere.Hedidnotknowthatjustthatsimplethoughtwasslowlyfillinghismind—fillingandfillingituntilotherthingsweresoftlypushedaside.Itwasasifasweetclearspringhadbeguntoriseinastagnantpoolandhadrisenandrisenuntilatlastitsweptthedarkwateraway.Butofcoursehedidnotthinkofthishimself.Heonlyknewthatthevalleyseemedtogrowquieterandquieterashesatandstaredatthebrightdelicateblueness.Hedidnotknowhowlonghesatthereorwhatwashappeningtohim,butatlasthemovedasifhewereawakeningandhegotupslowlyandstoodonthemosscarpet,drawingalong,deep,softbreathandwonderingathimself.Somethingseemedtohavebeenunboundandreleasedinhim,veryquietly.

           “Whatisit?”hesaid,almostinawhisper,andhepassedhishandoverhisforehead.“Ialmostfeelasif—Iwerealive!”

           Idonotknowenoughaboutthewonderfulnessofundiscoveredthingstobeabletoexplainhowthishadhappenedtohim.Neitherdoesanyoneelseyet.Hedidnotunderstandatallhimself—butherememberedthisstrangehourmonthsafterwardwhenhewasatMisselthwaiteagainandhefoundoutquitebyaccidentthatonthisverydayColinhadcriedoutashewentintothesecretgarden:

           “Iamgoingtoliveforeverandeverandever!”

           Thesingularcalmnessremainedwithhimtherestoftheeveningandhesleptanewreposefulsleep;butitwasnotwithhimverylong.Hedidnotknowthatitcouldbekept.
