“Anythin’I’mtoldtodo,”answeredoldBen.“I’mkep’onbyfavor—becauseshelikedme.”
“She?”saidColin.
“Tha’mother,”answeredBenWeatherstaff.
“Mymother?”saidColin,andhelookedabouthimquietly.“Thiswashergarden,wasn’tit?”
“Aye,itwasthat!”andBenWeatherstafflookedabouthimtoo.“Sheweremainfondofit.”
“Itismygardennow.Iamfondofit.Ishallcomehereeveryday,”announcedColin.“Butitistobeasecret.Myordersarethatnooneistoknowthatwecomehere.Dickonandmycousinhaveworkedandmadeitcomealive.Ishallsendforyousometimestohelp—butyoumustcomewhennoonecanseeyou.”
BenWeatherstaff’sfacetwisteditselfinadryoldsmile.
