           Marystillgazedatthetreeandthought.

           “It’sbeendonemanyayear,”answeredDickon.“Eh!”withasuddenrelievedstartandlayinghishandonColin.“Lookatthatrobin!Thereheis!He’sbeenforagin’forhismate.”

           Colinwasalmosttoolatebuthejustcaughtsightofhim,theflashofred-breastedbirdwithsomethinginhisbeak.Hedartedthroughthegreennessandintotheclose-growncornerandwasoutofsight.Colinleanedbackonhiscushionagain,laughingalittle.

           “He’stakingherteatoher.Perhapsit’sfiveo’clock.IthinkI’dlikesometeamyself.”

           Andsotheyweresafe.

           “ItwasMagicwhichsenttherobin,”saidMarysecretlytoDickonafterward.“IknowitwasMagic.”ForbothsheandDickonhadbeenafraidColinmightasksomethingaboutthetreewhosebranchhadbrokenofftenyearsagoandtheyhadtalkeditovertogetherandDickonhadstoodandrubbedhisheadinatroubledway.

           “Wemunlookasifitwasn’tnodifferentfromth’othertrees,”hehadsaid.
