           ThatnightColinsleptwithoutonceawakeningandwhenheopenedhiseyesinthemorninghelaystillandsmiledwithoutknowingit—smiledbecausehefeltsocuriouslycomfortable.Itwasactuallynicetobeawake,andheturnedoverandstretchedhislimbsluxuriously.Hefeltasiftightstringswhichhadheldhimhadloosenedthemselvesandlethimgo.HedidnotknowthatDr.Cravenwouldhavesaidthathisnerveshadrelaxedandrestedthemselves.Insteadoflyingandstaringatthewallandwishinghehadnotawakened,hismindwasfulloftheplansheandMaryhadmadeyesterday,ofpicturesofthegardenandofDickonandhiswildcreatures.Itwassonicetohavethingstothinkabout.AndhehadnotbeenawakemorethantenminuteswhenheheardfeetrunningalongthecorridorandMarywasatthedoor.Thenextminuteshewasintheroomandhadrunacrosstohisbed,bringingwithherawaftoffreshairfullofthescentofthemorning.

           “You’vebeenout!You’vebeenout!There’sthatnicesmellofleaves!”hecried.

           Shehadbeenrunningandherhairwaslooseandblownandshewasbrightwiththeairandpink-cheeked,thoughhecouldnotseeit.

           “It’ssobeautiful!”shesaid,alittlebreathlesswithherspeed.“Youneversawanythingsobeautiful!Ithascome!Ithoughtithadcomethatothermorning,butitwasonlycoming.
