           “Well,well,”hesaid.“Ifitamusesyouperhapsitwon’tdoyouanyharm.Didyoutakeyourbromidelastnight,Colin?”

           “No,”Colinanswered.“Iwouldn’ttakeitatfirstandafterMarymademequietshetalkedmetosleep—inalowvoice—aboutthespringcreepingintoagarden.”

           “Thatsoundssoothing,”saidDr.Craven,moreperplexedthaneverandglancingsidewaysatMistressMarysittingonherstoolandlookingdownsilentlyatthecarpet.“Youareevidentlybetter,butyoumustremember—”

           “Idon’twanttoremember,”interruptedtheRajah,appearingagain.“WhenIliebymyselfandrememberIbegintohavepainseverywhereandIthinkofthingsthatmakemebegintoscreambecauseIhatethemso.IftherewasadoctoranywherewhocouldmakeyouforgetyouwereillinsteadofrememberingitIwouldhavehimbroughthere.”Andhewavedathinhandwhichoughtreallytohavebeencoveredwithroyalsignetringsmadeofrubies.“Itisbecausemycousinmakesmeforgetthatshemakesmebetter.”

           Dr.Cravenhadnevermadesuchashortstayaftera“tantrum”;usuallyhewasobligedtoremainaverylongtimeanddoagreatmanythings.Thisafternoonhedidnotgiveanymedicineorleaveanynewordersandhewassparedanydisagreeablescenes.WhenhewentdownstairshelookedverythoughtfulandwhenhetalkedtoMrs.Medlockinthelibraryshefeltthathewasamuchpuzzledman.
