           “Tha’sagoodbitstrongerthantha’was,”Dickonsaid,lookingatherasshewasdigging.“Tha’sbeginningtolookdifferent,forsure.”

           Marywasglowingwithexerciseandgoodspirits.

           “I’mgettingfatterandfattereveryday,”shesaidquiteexultantly.“Mrs.Medlockwillhavetogetmesomebiggerdresses.Marthasaysmyhairisgrowingthicker.Itisn’tsoflatandstringy.”

           Thesunwasbeginningtosetandsendingdeepgold-coloredraysslantingunderthetreeswhentheyparted.

           “It’llbefinetomorrow,”saidDickon.“I’llbeatworkbysunrise.”

           “SowillI,”saidMary.

           Sheranbacktothehouseasquicklyasherfeetwouldcarryher.ShewantedtotellColinaboutDickon’sfoxcubandtherookandaboutwhatthespringtimehadbeendoing.Shefeltsurehewouldliketohear.Soitwasnotverypleasantwhensheopenedthedoorofherroom,toseeMarthastandingwaitingforherwithadolefulface.
