           Therewaseveryjoyonearthinthesecretgardenthatmorning,andinthemidstofthemcameadelightmoredelightfulthanall,becauseitwasmorewonderful.Swiftlysomethingflewacrossthewallanddartedthroughthetreestoaclosegrowncorner,alittleflareofred-breastedbirdwithsomethinghangingfromitsbeak.DickonstoodquitestillandputhishandonMaryalmostasiftheyhadsuddenlyfoundthemselveslaughinginachurch.

           “Wemunnotstir,”hewhisperedinbroadYorkshire.“Wemunnotscarcebreathe.Iknowedhewasmate-huntin’whenIseedhimlast.It’sBenWeatherstaff’srobin.He’sbuildin’hisnest.He’llstayhereifusdon’tflighthim.”

           Theysettleddownsoftlyuponthegrassandsattherewithoutmoving.

           “Usmustn’tseemasifuswaswatchin’himtooclose,”saidDickon.“He’dbeoutwithusforgoodifhegotth’notionuswasinterferin’now.He’llbeagoodbitdifferenttillallthisisover.He’ssettin’uphousekeepin’.He’llbeshyeran’readiertotakethingsill.
