           Colinlaybackonhiscushionandhiseyesgrewlargerandlargerandthespotsonhischeeksburned.

           “Heknowsallabouteggsandnests,”Marywenton.“Andheknowswherefoxesandbadgersandotterslive.Hekeepsthemsecretsothatotherboyswon’tfindtheirholesandfrightenthem.Heknowsabouteverythingthatgrowsorlivesonthemoor.”

           “Doeshelikethemoor?”saidColin.“Howcanhewhenit’ssuchagreat,bare,drearyplace?”

           “It’sthemostbeautifulplace,”protestedMary.“Thousandsoflovelythingsgrowonitandtherearethousandsoflittlecreaturesallbusybuildingnestsandmakingholesandburrowsandchipperingorsingingorsqueakingtoeachother.Theyaresobusyandhavingsuchfunundertheearthorinthetreesorheather.It’stheirworld.”

           “Howdoyouknowallthat?”saidColin,turningonhiselbowtolookather.

           “Ihaveneverbeenthereonce,really,”saidMarysuddenlyremembering.“Ionlydroveoveritinthedark.Ithoughtitwashideous.MarthatoldmeaboutitfirstandthenDickon.WhenDickontalksaboutityoufeelasifyousawthingsandheardthemandasifyouwerestandingintheheatherwiththesunshiningandthegorsesmellinglikehoney—andallfullofbeesandbutterflies.
