           “Ididnotknowbirdscouldbelikethat,”hesaid.“Butifyoustayinaroomyouneverseethings.Whatalotofthingsyouknow.Ifeelasifyouhadbeeninsidethatgarden.”

           Shedidnotknowwhattosay,soshedidnotsayanything.Heevidentlydidnotexpectananswerandthenextmomenthegaveherasurprise.

           “Iamgoingtoletyoulookatsomething,”hesaid.“Doyouseethatrose-coloredsilkcurtainhangingonthewalloverthemantel-piece?”

           Maryhadnotnoticeditbefore,butshelookedupandsawit.Itwasacurtainofsoftsilkhangingoverwhatseemedtobesomepicture.

           “Yes,”sheanswered.

           “Thereisacordhangingfromit,”saidColin.“Goandpullit.”

           Marygotup,muchmystified,andfoundthecord.Whenshepulleditthesilkcurtainranbackonringsandwhenitranbackituncoveredapicture.Itwasthepictureofagirlwithalaughingface.
