           “Ididn’twhenfirstIcamehere,”saidMary.“Whydoyoukeeplookingatmelikethat?”

           “Becauseofthedreamsthataresoreal,”heansweredratherfretfully.“SometimeswhenIopenmyeyesIdon’tbelieveI’mawake.”

           “We’rebothawake,”saidMary.Sheglancedroundtheroomwithitshighceilingandshadowycornersanddimfire-light.“Itlooksquitelikeadream,andit’sthemiddleofthenight,andeverybodyinthehouseisasleep—everybodybutus.Wearewideawake.”

           “Idon’twantittobeadream,”theboysaidrestlessly.

           Marythoughtofsomethingallatonce.

           “Ifyoudon’tlikepeopletoseeyou,”shebegan,“doyouwantmetogoaway?”

           Hestillheldthefoldofherwrapperandhegaveitalittlepull.

           “No,”hesaid.“Ishouldbesureyouwereadreamifyouwent.Ifyouarereal,sitdownonthatbigfootstoolandtalk.Iwanttohearaboutyou.”

           Maryputdownhercandleonthetablenearthebedandsatdownonthecushionedstool.Shedidnotwanttogoawayatall.Shewantedtostayinthemysterioushidden-awayroomandtalktothemysteriousboy.

           “Whatdoyouwantmetotellyou?”shesaid.
