           Therewasacandlebyherbedsideandshetookitupandwentsoftlyoutoftheroom.Thecorridorlookedverylonganddark,butshewastooexcitedtomindthat.Shethoughtsherememberedthecornersshemustturntofindtheshortcorridorwiththedoorcoveredwithtapestry—theoneMrs.Medlockhadcomethroughthedayshelostherself.Thesoundhadcomeupthatpassage.Soshewentonwithherdimlight,almostfeelingherway,herheartbeatingsoloudthatshefanciedshecouldhearit.Thefar-offfaintcryingwentonandledher.Sometimesitstoppedforamomentorsoandthenbeganagain.Wasthistherightcornertoturn?Shestoppedandthought.Yesitwas.
