           Hegazedatheramomentandthenpassedhishandquicklyoverhiseyes.

           Mr.Cravengotupandbegantowalkslowlyacrosstheroom.

           “MayItakeitfromanywhere—ifit’snotwanted?”

           “Anywhere,”heanswered.“There!Youmustgonow,Iamtired.”HetouchedthebelltocallMrs.Medlock.“Good-by.Ishallbeawayallsummer.”

           Mrs.MedlockcamesoquicklythatMarythoughtshemusthavebeenwaitinginthecorridor.

           “Mrs.Medlock,”Mr.Cravensaidtoher,“nowIhaveseenthechildIunderstandwhatMrs.Sowerbymeant.
