Theysawtheafterpartoftheship,blazingwithlight,standup,asuspendedprodigy,betweenthestarsandthewaters;theysawtheblackatoms,eachoneofwhichtheyknewtobealivingmanorwomanonfirewithagony,slidingdownlikeshotrubbishintothesea;theysawthegiantdecksbendandcrack;theyheardahollowandtremendousrumblingasthegreatenginestorethemselvesfromtheirsteelbedsandcrashedthroughtheship;theysawsparksstreaminginagoldenrainfromoneofthefunnels;heardthedullboomofanexplosionwhilethespoutingfunnelfelloverintotheseawithaslapthatkilledeveryonebeneathitandsetthenearestboatrocking;heardtwomoredullburstingreportsasthesteelbulkheadsgavewayordecksblewup;sawthelightsflickerout,flickerbackagain,andthengooutforever,andtheship,likesomegiantseacreatureforsakingthestrifeoftheupperelementsforthepeaceofthesubmarinedepths,launchedherselfwithoneslowplungeanddivebeneaththewaves.
Therewasnogreatmaelstromastheyhadfeared,buttheseawasswellingandsinkingallaboutthem;andtheycouldseewavesandeddieswhererosetheimprisonedair,thesmokeandsteamofvomited-upashes,andabobbingcommotionofsmalldarkthingswheretheTitanic,inherprideandhershame,withtheclockstickingandthefiresburninginherluxuriousrooms,hadplungeddowntotheicydepthsofdeath.
