Thelastcollapsibleboatwasbeingstruggledwithontheupperdeck,buttherewerenoseamenaboutwhounderstooditsstiffmechanism;unaccustomedhandsfumbleddesperatelywithit,andfinallypusheditoverthesideinitscollapsedconditionforuseasaraft.Manyoftheseamenandstewardshadgatheredinthebar-room,wheretheattendantwasservingoutglassesofwhiskeytoanyandallwhocameforit;butmostmenhadaninstinctagainstbeingundercover,andpreferredtostandoutintheopen.
