Theyknewthatthereweremanyshipsintheirvicinity;buttheyknewalsothathardlyanyofthemcarriedmorethanoneoperator,andthatevenMarconioperatorsearningL4amonthmustgotobedandsleepsometimes,andthatitwasamerechanceiftheircallwasheard.ButpresentlytheCunardlinerCarpathiaansweredandtoldthemherposition,fromwhichitappearedthatshewasaboutseventymilesaway.TheCarpathia,whichwasheadingtowardstheMediterranean,toldthemshehadalteredhercourseandwasheadingfullsteamtotheirassistance.TheCarpathia’svoicewasmuchfainterthantheFrankfurt’s,fromwhichPhillipsassumedthattheFrankfurtwasthenearership;buttherewasacertainlackofpromptitudeonboardtheFrankfurtwhichmadePhillipsimpatient.Whilehewasstillsendingoutthecallforhelp,aftertheFrankfurthadansweredit,sheinterruptedhimagain,askingwhatwasthematter.TheytoldCaptainSmith,whosaid,“Thatfellowisafool,”anopinionwhichPhillipsandBridenotonlyshared,butwhichtheyevenfoundtimetocommunicatetotheoperatorontheFrankfurt.BythistimetheOlympichadalsoansweredhertwinsister’scryforhelp,butshewasfaraway,morethanthreehundredmiles;andalthoughshetooturnedandbegantoracetowardsthespotwheretheTitanicwaslyingsoquietly,itwasfeltthatthehonoursofsalvingherpassengerswouldgototheCarpathia.
