Insteadofthetrimlevelappearancewhichshepresentedonthepicturepostcardsorphotographs,shehadanungracefulslantdownwardstothebowsaheavyhelplessappearancelikesomewoundedmonsterthatisbeingovercomebythewaters.Andevenwhiletheylooked,theycouldseethatthebowwassinkinglower.
Afterthefirstboathadgotaway,therewaslessdifficultyabouttheothers.Theorder,“Womenandchildrenfirst,”wasrigidlyenforcedbytheofficers;butitwasnecessarytohavemenintheboatstohandlethem,andanumberofstewards,andmanygrimyfiguresofstokerswhohadmysteriouslyappearedfrombelowwereputintothemtomanthem.Oncethetideofpeoplebegantosetintotheboatsandawayfromtheship,therecameacertainanxietytojointhemandnottobeleftbehind.Hereandthereindeedtherewasover-anxiety,whichhadtoberoughlychecked.OnebandofItaliansfromthesteerage,whohadgoodreasontoknowthatsomethingwaswrong,triedtorushoneoftheboats,andhadtobekeptbackbyforce,anofficerfiringacoupleofshotswithhispistol;theydesisted,andwerehauledbackignominiouslybythelegs.IntheirplacesomeofthecrewandthepassengerswhowerehelpingliftedinanumberofItalianwomenlimpwithfright.
Andstilleveryonewaswalkingaboutandsayingthattheshipwasunsinkable.Therewasacertainsubduedexcitement,naturaltothosewhofeelthattheyaretakingpartinaratherthrillingadventurewhichwillgivethemimportanceintheeyesofpeopleathomewhentheyrelateit.
