Buttheunnaturalstillness,theuncannypeaceevenofthisgreatpeacefulship,musthavegotalittleuponhisnerves;andwhenheheardpeoplemovingaboutinthecorridors,hegotupagain,andfoundthatseveralpeoplewhomthestillnesshadwakenedfromtheirsleepwerewanderingaboutinquiringwhathadhappened.
Butthatwasall.Thehalf-hourwhichfollowedthestoppageoftheshipwasacomparativelyquiethalf-hour,inwhichafewpeoplecameoutoftheircabinsindeed,andcollectedtogetherinthecorridorsandstaircasesgossiping,speculatingandaskingquestionsastowhatcouldhavehappened;butitwasnotatimeofanxiety,oranythinglikeit.NothingcouldbesaferonthisquietSundaynightthanthegreatship,warmedandlightedeverywhere,withherthickcarpetsandpaddedarmchairsandcushionedrecesses;andifanythingcouldhaveaddedtothesenseofpeaceandstability,itwasthatherdrivingmotionhadceased,andthatshelaysolidandmotionless-likearockinthesea,thestillwaterscarcelylappingagainsthersides.Andthoseofherpeoplewhohadthoughtitworthwhiletogetoutofbedstoodaboutinlittleknots,andaskedfoolishquestions,andgavefoolishanswersinthefamiliarmannerofpassengersonshipboardwhentheslightestincidentoccurstovarytheregularandmonotonousroutine.
