Forthefirst-classpassengerstheworldwasaverysmallplace,aboutwhichmanyofthemwereaccustomedtohurryinanimportantwayintheprocessofspendingandgettingtheirmoney,takinganAtlanticlinerashumblerpeopletakeatramcar,withoutgivingmuchthoughttoitorlayingelaborateplans,runningbackwardsandforwardsacrosstheAtlanticanditsdangersaschildrenrunacrosstheroadinfrontofamotorcar.TheyweregoingtoAmericathisweek;theywouldprobablycomebacknextweekortheweekafter.TheywerethepeopleforwhomtheTitanichadspeciallybeendesigned;itwasforthemthatalltheluxurieshadbeencontrived,sothatintheirrunningsbackwardsandforwardstheyshouldnotfindthelongdaystediousorthemselvesdivorcedfromthekindofaccompanimentstolifewhichtheyhadcometoregardasnecessities.
Butforthepeopleinthesteeragethiswasnohurryingtripbetweenonebusinessofficeandanother;nohastyholidayarrangedtosandwichtenthousandmilesofozoneasarefresherbetweentwobusinessengagements.Thiswestwardprogresswasforthempartofthedriftoftheirlives,looseningthemfromtheirnativesoiltoscatteranddistributethemovertheNewWorld,inthehopethatinfreshersoilandlesscrowdedconditionstheywouldstrikenewrootsandbeginanewlife.Theroadtheytravelledwasformostofthemaroadtobetravelledonceonly,aroadtheyknewtheywouldneverretrace.
