TheEmpressofBritain,whichpassedtheTitaniconFriday,reportedanimmensequantityoffloatingiceintheneighbourhoodofCapeRace.WhenshearrivedinLiverpoolittranspiredthat,whenthreedaysoutfromHalifax,NovaScotia,sheencounteredanice-field,ahundredmilesinextent,withenormousbergswhichappearedtobejoinedtotheice-field,forminganimmensewhiteline,brokenwithpeaksandpinnaclesonthehorizon.TheCarmaniaandtheNicaragua,whichweregoingwestwardaheadoftheTitanic,hadbothbecomeentangledinice,andtheNicaraguahadsustainedconsiderabledamage.Anddaybyday,almosthourbyhour,newswascominginfromothershipscommentingontheunusualextentsouthwardoftheice-field,andontheunusualnumberoficebergswhichtheyhadencountered.NodoubtmanyofthepassengersontheTitanicwerehopingthattheywouldmeetwithsome;itisoneofthechiefinterestsoftheNorthAtlanticvoyageinthespringandsummer;andnothingismorelovelyinthebrightsunshineofdaythanthesightofoneofthesegiantislands,withitsmountain-peakssparklinginthesun,andbluewavesbreakingonitscrystalshores;nothingmoreimpressivethanthethought,asonelooksatit,thathighasitsglitteringtowersandpinnaclesmaysoartowardsheaventhereiseighttimesasgreatadepthoficeextendingdownwardsintothedarksea
