Withtheseexceptions,inthisgreatfour-storiedbuildingweresituatedallthemostmagnificentandpalatialaccommodationsoftheship.Immediatelybeneathit,amidships,inthesteadiestpartofthevesselwhereanymovementwouldbeleastfelt,wasthefirst-classdiningsaloon,withthepantriesandkitchensimmediatelyaftofit.Twodecksbelowitwerethethird-classdiningsaloonsandkitchens;belowthemagain,separatedbyaheavysteeldeck,weretheboiler-roomsandcoalbunkers,restingonthecellulardoublebottomoftheship.Immediatelyaftoftheboiler-roomscamethetwoengine-rooms;theforwardandlargeroneofthetwocontainedthereciprocatingengineswhichdrovethetwinscrews,andtheafteronetheturbineenginefordrivingthelargecentrepropeller.
Forwardandaftofthiscentrepartoftheship,whichinrealityoccupiedabouttwo-thirdsofherwholelength,weretwosmallersections,divided(againonespeaksroughly)betweensecond-classaccommodation,storesandcargointhesternsection,andthird-classberths,crew’squartersandcargointhebowsection.Butalthoughthefirst-classaccommodationwasallamidships,andthesecond-classallaft,thatofthethird-classwasscatteredaboutinsuchblankspacesascouldbefoundforit.
