Buttheshiphasgatheredway,andisslidingalongpasttheNeedles,wherethelittlewhitelighthouselookssopaltrybesidethetoweringcliff.TheChannelairiskeen,andthebuglesaresoundingforlunch;andourtravellergoesdownthestaircase,noticingperhaps,ashepasses,thegreatclockwithitsfigureswhichsymbolizeHonourandGlorycrowningTime.HonourandGlorymusthavefeltjustalittlerestiveas,havingcrownedoneo’clock,theylookeddownfromTimeuponthethrongofpeopledescendingthestaircasetolunch.Therewereafewtherewhohadearned,andmanywhohadreceived,thehonourandgloryrepresentedbyextremewealth;butthetwofiguresstoopingovertheclockmayhavefeltthatSuccesscrowningOpportunitywouldhavebeenasymbolmorebefittingthefirst-classpassengersoftheTitanic.Perhapstheylookedmorekindlyasonewhite-hairedoldmanpassedbeneathW.T.Stead,thatuntiringoldwarriorandfiercecampaignerinpeacefulcauses,whoinfieldswherehonourandgloryweretobefoundsoughtalwaysforthetrueandnotthefalse.Thereweremanykindsofmentherenoteverykind,foritisnoteverymanwhocanpayfromfiftytoeighthundredguineasforafourdays’journey;butmostkindsofmenandwomenwhocanaffordtodothatwererepresentedthere.
