“Wearenotworriedoverthepossiblelossoftheship,asshewillnotgodown,butwearesorryfortheinconveniencecausedtothetravellingpublic.WeareabsolutelycertainthattheTitanicisabletowithstandanydamage.Shemaybedownbythehead,butwouldfloatindefinitelyinthatcondition.”
Stillthatsameword,“unsinkable,”whichhadnowindeedforthefirsttimebecomeatrueone:foritisonlywhensheliesatthebottomoftheseathatanyshipcanbecalledunsinkable.OnTuesdaymorningwhenthedreadfulnewswasfirstcertainlyknown,thoseproudwordshadtobetakenback.AgainMr.Franklinhadtofacethereporters,andthistimehecouldonlysay:
