           Whentheirvoicesdiedawaytherecamecoldsilenceoverthelagoon,andthenafeeblecry.

           ’Help,help!’

           Twosmallfigureswerebeatingagainsttherock;thegirlhadfaintedandlayontheboy’sarm.WithalasteffortPeterpulledheruptherockandthenlaydownbesideher.Evenashealsofaintedhesawthatthewaterwasrising.Heknewthattheywouldsoonbedrowned,buthecoulddonomore.

           AstheylaysidebysideamermaidcaughtWendybythefeet,andbeganpullinghersoftlyintothewater.Peter,feelingherslipfromhim,wokewithastart,andwasjustintimetodrawherback.Buthehadtotellherthetruth.
