           Sotheylaythereinthesun,andtheirbodiesglistenedinit,whileshesatbesidethemandlookedimportant.

           Whileshestitchedachangecametothelagoon.Littleshiversranoverit,andthesunwentawayandshadowsstoleacrossthewater,turningitcold.Wendycouldnolongerseetothreadherneedle,andwhenshelookedup,thelagoonthathadalwayshithertobeensuchalaughingplaceseemedformidableandunfriendly.

           Itwasnot,sheknew,thatnighthadcome,butsomethingasdarkasnighthadcome.No,worsethanthat.Ithadnotcome,butithadsentthatshiverthroughtheseatosaythatitwascoming.Whatwasit?

           TherecrowdeduponherallthestoriesshehadbeentoldofMarooners’Rock,socalledbecauseevilcaptainsputsailorsonitandleavethemtheretodrown.Theydrownwhenthetiderises,forthenitissubmerged.
