           Itmayhavebeenquixotic,butitwasmagnificent.Soontheinwardmeaningofitleakedout,andthegreatheartofthepublicwastouched.Crowdsfollowedthecab,cheeringitlustily;charminggirlsscaledittogethisautograph;interviewsappearedinthebetterclassofpapers,andsocietyinvitedhimtodinnerandadded,’Docomeinthekennel.’

           OnthateventfulThursdayweekMrs.Darlingwasinthenight-nurseryawaitingGeorge’sreturnhome:averysad-eyedwoman.Nowthatwelookathercloselyandrememberthegaietyofherintheolddays,allgonenowjustbecauseshehaslostherbabes,IfindIwon’tbeabletosaynastythingsaboutherafterall.Ifshewastoofondofherrubbishychildrenshecouldn’thelpit.
