           Thisdaringmiscreantdetailed,withalltheembellishmentsandflourishessuggestedbyhisbasemindandhisruffianlyimagination,theattemptswhichhepretendedCorneliusdeWitthadmadetocorrupthim;thesumsofmoneywhichwerepromised,andallthediabolicalstratagemsplannedbeforehandtosmoothforhim,Tyckelaer,allthedifficultiesinthepathofmurder.

           Andeveryphaseofhisspeech,eagerlylistenedtobythepopulace,calledforthenthusiasticcheersforthePrinceofOrange,andgroansandimprecationsofblindfuryagainstthebrothersDeWitt.

           Themobevenbegantoventitsragebyinveighingagainsttheiniquitousjudges,whohadallowedsuchadetestablecriminalasthevillainCorneliustogetoffsocheaply.

           Someoftheagitatorswhispered,“Hewillbeoff,hewillescapefromus!”

           Othersreplied,“AvesseliswaitingforhimatSchevening,aFrenchcraft.Tyckelaerhasseenher.”

           “HonestTyckelaer!HurrahforTyckelaer!”themobcriedinchorus.

           “Andletusnotforget,”avoiceexclaimedfromthecrowd,“thatatthesametimewithCorneliushisbrotherJohn,whoisasrascallyatraitorashimself,willlikewisemakehisescape.”

           “AndthetworogueswillinFrancemakemerrywithourmoney,withthemoneyforourvessels,ourarsenals,andourdockyards,whichtheyhavesoldtoLouisXIV.”

           “Well,then,don’tletusallowthemtodepart!”advisedoneofthepatriotswhohadgainedthestartoftheothers.

           “Forwardtotheprison,totheprison!”echoedthecrowd.
