           Inthebeginningoftheyear1672,CorneliusdeWittcametoDortforthreemonths,toliveathisoldfamilymansion;fornotonlywasheborninthatcity,buthisfamilyhadbeenresidentthereforcenturies.

           Cornelius,atthatperiod,asWilliamofOrangesaid,begantoenjoythemostperfectunpopularity.Tohisfellowcitizens,thegoodburghersofDort,however,hedidnotappearinthelightofacriminalwhodeservedtobehung.Itistrue,theydidnotparticularlylikehissomewhataustererepublicanism,buttheywereproudofhisvalour;andwhenhemadehisentranceintotheirtown,thecupofhonourwasofferedtohim,readilyenough,inthenameofthecity.

           Afterhavingthankedhisfellowcitizens,Corneliusproceededtohisoldpaternalhouse,andgavedirectionsforsomerepairs,whichhewishedtohaveexecutedbeforethearrivalofhiswifeandchildren;andthencehewendedhiswaytothehouseofhisgodson,whoperhapswastheonlypersoninDortasyetunacquaintedwiththepresenceofCorneliusinthetown.

           InthesamedegreeasCorneliusdeWitthadexcitedthehatredofthepeoplebysowingthoseevilseedswhicharecalledpoliticalpassions,VanBaerlehadgainedtheaffectionsofhisfellowcitizensbycompletelyshunningthepursuitofpolitics,absorbedashewasinthepeacefulpursuitofcultivatingtulips.

           VanBaerlewastrulybelovedbyhisservantsandlabourers;norhadheanyconceptionthattherewasinthisworldamanwhowishedilltoanother.
