ItwasveryeasyforCorneliustowaitfortwelveatmidday,ashewasalreadywaitingfornineatnight.

Thedooropened.Gryphusentered,ledhismenin,andshutthedoorafterthem.
“There,nowsearch!”
TheysearchednotonlythepocketsofCornelius,butevenhisperson;yettheyfoundnothing.
Theythensearchedthesheets,themattress,andthestrawmattressofhisbed;andagaintheyfoundnothing.
Now,Corneliusrejoicedthathehadnottakenthethirdsuckerunderhisowncare.Gryphuswouldhavebeensuretoferretitoutinthesearch,andwouldthenhavetreateditashedidthefirst.
AndcertainlyneverdidprisonerlookwithgreatercomplacencyatasearchmadeinhiscellthanCornelius.
GryphusretiredwiththepencilandthetwoorthreeleavesofwhitepaperwhichRosahadgiventoVanBaerle,thiswastheonlytrophybroughtbackfromtheexpedition.
AtsixGryphuscamebackagain,butalone;Corneliustriedtopropitiatehim,butGryphusgrowled,showedalargetoothlikeatusk,whichhehadinthecornerofhismouth,andwentoutbackwards,likeamanwhoisafraidofbeingattackedfrombehind.
