           Gryphus,quitetakenupwiththedesireofcatchingthepigeonsnextday,ashehadpromisedhewoulddo,sawandheardnothingofthisshortinterlude;and,afterhavingclosedthewindow,hetookthearmofhisdaughter,leftthecell,turnedthekeytwice,drewthebolts,andwentofftomakethesamekindpromisetotheotherprisoners.

           Hehadscarcelywithdrawn,whenCorneliuswenttothedoortolistentothesoundofhisfootsteps,and,assoonastheyhaddiedaway,herantothewindow,andcompletelydemolishedthenestofthepigeons.

           Ratherthanexposethemtothetendermerciesofhisbullyingjailer,hedroveawayforeverthosegentlemessengerstowhomheowedthehappinessofhavingseenRosaagain.

           Thisvisitofthejailer,hisbrutalthreats,andthegloomyprospectoftheharshnesswithwhich,ashehadbeforeexperienced,Gryphuswatchedhisprisoners,allthiswasunabletoextinguishinCorneliusthesweetthoughts,andespeciallythesweethope,whichthepresenceofRosahadreawakenedinhisheart.

           HewaitedeagerlytoheartheclockofthetowerofLoewesteinstrikenine.

           Thelastchimewasstillvibratingthroughtheair,whenCorneliusheardonthestaircasethelightstepandtherustleoftheflowingdressofthefairFrisianmaid,andsoonafteralightappearedatthelittlegratedwindowinthedoor,onwhichtheprisonerfixedhisearnestgaze.

           Theshutteropenedontheoutside.

           “HereIam,”saidRosa,outofbreathfromrunningupthestairs,“hereIam.”
