           Andnow,somedaysofbittergriefhavingelapsed,anobservablechangecameoverthefeaturesofthementaldisorderofmyfriend. Hisordinarymannerhadvanished. Hisordinaryoccupationswereneglectedorforgotten. Heroamedfromchambertochamberwithhurried,unequal,andobjectlessstep. Thepallorofhiscountenancehadassumed,ifpossible,amoreghastlyhue—buttheluminousnessofhiseyehadutterlygoneout. Theonceoccasionalhuskinessofhistonewasheardnomore;andatremulousquaver,asifofextremeterror,habituallycharacterizedhisutterance. Thereweretimes,indeed,whenIthoughthisunceasinglyagitatedmindwaslaboringwithsomeoppressivesecret,todivulgewhichhestruggledforthenecessarycourage. Attimes,again,Iwasobligedtoresolveallintothemereinexplicablevagariesofmadness,forIbeheldhimgazinguponvacancyforlonghours,inanattitudeoftheprofoundestattention,asiflisteningtosomeimaginarysound. Itwasnowonderthathisconditionterrified—thatitinfectedme.
