           Sissyresumedinalowervoice.‘Atlastpoorfathersaidthathehadgivennosatisfactionagain,andneverdidgiveanysatisfactionnow,andthathewasashameanddisgrace,andIshouldhavedonebetterwithouthimallalong.Isaidalltheaffectionatethingstohimthatcameintomyheart,andpresentlyhewasquietandIsatdownbyhim,andtoldhimallabouttheschoolandeverythingthathadbeensaidanddonethere.WhenIhadnomorelefttotell,heputhisarmsroundmyneck,andkissedmeagreatmanytimes.Thenheaskedmetofetchsomeofthestuffheused,forthelittlehurthehadhad,andtogetitatthebestplace,whichwasattheotherendoftownfromthere;andthen,afterkissingmeagain,heletmego.WhenIhadgonedown-stairs,IturnedbackthatImightbealittlebitmorecompanytohimyet,andlookedinatthedoor,andsaid,“Fatherdear,shallItakeMerrylegs?”Fathershookhisheadandsaid,“No,Sissy,no;takenothingthat’sknowntobemine,mydarling;”andIlefthimsittingbythefire.
