           ‘Imean,I’llenjoymyselfalittle,andgoaboutandseesomething,andhearsomething.I’llrecompensemyselfforthewayinwhichIhavebeenbroughtup.’

           ‘Butdon’tdisappointyourselfbeforehand,Tom.Mr.Bounderbythinksasfatherthinks,andisagreatdealrougher,andnothalfsokind.’

           ‘Oh!’saidTom,laughing;‘Idon’tmindthat.IshallverywellknowhowtomanageandsmootholdBounderby!’

           Theirshadowsweredefineduponthewall,butthoseofthehighpressesintheroomwereallblendedtogetheronthewallandontheceiling,asifthebrotherandsisterwereoverhungbyadarkcavern.Or,afancifulimaginationifsuchtreasoncouldhavebeentheremighthavemadeitouttobetheshadowoftheirsubject,andofitsloweringassociationwiththeirfuture.

           ‘Whatisyourgreatmodeofsmoothingandmanaging,Tom?Isitasecret?’

           ‘Oh!’saidTom,‘ifitisasecret,it’snotfaroff.It’syou.Youarehislittlepet,youarehisfavourite;he’lldoanythingforyou.
