Thetwotravelledallnight,exceptwhentheywereleft,foroddnumbersofminutes,atbranch-places,upillimitableflightsofsteps,ordownwells—whichwastheonlyvarietyofthosebranches—and,earlyinthemorning,wereturnedoutonaswamp,amileortwofromthetowntheysought.
