The Starlight

           Astheseweremade,theywerehunguponanarmofthepitmanwhohadlastcomeup,withinstructionshowtousethem:andashestood,shownbythelighthecarried,leaninghispowerfulloosehandupononeofthepoles,andsometimesglancingdownthepit,andsometimesglancingrounduponthepeople,hewasnottheleastconspicuousfigureinthescene.Itwasdarknow,andtorcheswerekindled.

           Itappearedfromthelittlethismansaidtothoseabouthim,whichwasquicklyrepeatedalloverthecircle,thatthelostmanhadfallenuponamassofcrumbledrubbishwithwhichthepitwashalfchokedup,andthathisfallhadbeenfurtherbrokenbysomejaggedearthattheside.Helayuponhisbackwithonearmdoubledunderhim,andaccordingtohisownbeliefhadhardlystirredsincehefell,exceptthathehadmovedhisfreehandtoasidepocket,inwhichherememberedtohavesomebreadandmeat(ofwhichhehadswallowedcrumbs),andhadlikewisescoopedupalittlewaterinitnowandthen.Hehadcomestraightawayfromhiswork,onbeingwrittento,andhadwalkedthewholejourney;andwasonhiswaytoMr.Bounderby’scountryhouseafterdark,whenhefell.Hewascrossingthatdangerouscountryatsuchadangeroustime,becausehewasinnocentofwhatwaslaidtohischarge,andcouldn’trestfromcomingthenearestwaytodeliverhimselfup.TheOldHellShaft,thepitmansaid,withacurseuponit,wasworthyofitsbadnametothelast;forthoughStephencouldspeaknow,hebelieveditwouldsoonbefoundtohavemangledthelifeoutofhim.
