           Intruth,Mrs.Gradgrind’sstockoffactsingeneralwaswoefullydefective;butMr.Gradgrindinraisinghertoherhighmatrimonialposition,hadbeeninfluencedbytworeasons.Firstly,shewasmostsatisfactoryasaquestionoffigures;and,secondly,shehad‘nononsense’abouther.Bynonsensehemeantfancy;andtrulyitisprobableshewasasfreefromanyalloyofthatnature,asanyhumanbeingnotarrivedattheperfectionofanabsoluteidiot,everwas.

           ThesimplecircumstanceofbeingleftalonewithherhusbandandMr.Bounderby,wassufficienttostunthisadmirableladyagainwithoutcollisionbetweenherselfandanyotherfact.So,sheoncemorediedaway,andnobodymindedher.

           ‘Bounderby,’saidMr.Gradgrind,drawingachairtothefireside,‘youarealwayssointerestedinmyyoungpeopleparticularlyinLouisathatImakenoapologyforsayingtoyou,Iamverymuchvexedbythisdiscovery.Ihavesystematicallydevotedmyself(asyouknow)totheeducationofthereasonofmyfamily.Thereasonis(asyouknow)theonlyfacultytowhicheducationshouldbeaddressed.
