           Hisignorancewasasremarkableashisknowledge. Ofcontemporaryliterature,philosophyandpoliticsheappearedtoknownexttonothing. UponmyquotingThomasCarlyle,heinquiredinthenaivestwaywhohemightbeandwhathehaddone. Mysurprisereachedaclimax,however,whenIfoundincidentallythathewasignorantoftheCopernicanTheoryandofthecompositionoftheSolarSystem. ThatanycivilizedhumanbeinginthisnineteenthcenturyshouldnotbeawarethattheearthtravelledroundthesunappearedtobetomesuchanextraordinaryfactthatIcouldhardlyrealizeit.
