           Twentyhadchangedtofifteenandfifteentoten,buttherewasnonewsoftheabsentee. Onebyonethenumbersdwindleddown,andstilltherecamenosignofhim. Wheneverahorsemanclattereddowntheroad,oradrivershoutedathisteam,theoldfarmerhurriedtothegatethinkingthathelphadarrivedatlast. Atlast,whenhesawfivegivewaytofourandthatagaintothree,helostheart,andabandonedallhopeofescape. Single-handed,andwithhislimitedknowledgeofthemountainswhichsurroundedthesettlement,heknewthathewaspowerless. Themore-frequentedroadswerestrictlywatchedandguarded,andnonecouldpassalongthemwithoutanorderfromtheCouncil.
